Yeah, I know, it’s supposed to be on a Thursday, but whoever got anywhere following rules eh? Tuesday works.
So as I dig through my past designs to flesh out my online portfolio, it’s kinda like a trip down memory lane too. Some designs take me right back to a moment in time, and I think this one was a bit of a pivotal one as not only was it quite complex, but was going to be showcased by The Hub In The Forest (who I worked for at the time) by way of their MTB race team kit, merchandise and national mountain bike print media. No pressure then!
The design was based around the Hub’s original logo (pictured top left), but the brief was to adapt it to have a little more edge and shades of a ‘biker’ patch. The die hard rocker in me was compelled to shoehorn in an ‘Ace of Spades’ reference for which I used two to resemble the two trees of the original logo.
The floral detail in the background took by far the longest, and up until the last minute the actual buds were white, until a mistaken mouse click gave me the idea to make them red. The ‘Bleeding Cowboy’ font was pretty unique at the time, but has been done to death since unfortunately.
Thankfully, the final design, team jersey’s and print advertisements were well received and I’m still pretty proud of this design from 2009.
